One of the businesses thriving so well in Kisumu is the public transport business.
The industry has attracted more entrepreneurs due to its good returns.
With the ongoing construction of modern roads in the town, the business is expected to expand even more given the scarcity of matatu transportation in Kisumu estates.
Currently, 14-seater matatus are the most dominant type on the roads, given that they operate on a short distance.
Once one registers a new matatu, he or she hands it over to the driver with the tank full of petrol. As a norm, the driver is supposed to look for his own tout who helps him operate the vehicle.
Every evening, the driver hands the matatu back to the owner, with a full tank of petrol. Sh 3,000 is also paid to the boss regardless of how the business was. That translates to Sh21,000 every week.
“At the end of the day, you hand me Sh 3,000 plus the vehicle refilled to full tank. What you get on top of it is not our business. You take the vehicle the next morning,” said Bravin Olumi, the secretary general of 44 route Matatu owners.
Bravin, however, notes that decorating, furnishing, and pimping your vehicle will increase the daily returns as the matatu will sell itself to the public.
