Ngilu is also the first woman to contest for the presidential seat in Kenyan's history.

She unsuccessfully contested for the presidency in 1997.

Ngilu is among the politicians who have been pushing for constitutional reforms.

She was among the leaders who ended retired president Daniel Arap Moi’s 24-year rule.

However,  in 2013, Ngilu found herself in political limbo after she unsuccessfully contested for the Kitui senatorial seat.

Ngilu contested for the seat on her NARC Party ticket, she also campaigned for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in Ukambani.

After losing the senatorial election in 2013, Ngilu’s political future became uncertain until when President Uhuru Kenyatta rescued her.

Political analyst Peter Ngure observes that Ngilu would have plunged into political oblivion if Uhuru had not recurred her.

President Kenyatta who had won the 2013 presidential election surprised many people when he named Ngilu in his cabinet.

Ngilu was handed the Lands ministerial docket, a move that saved her political career.

However, in 2015, Ngilu was among the Cabinet Secretaries who were sacked over corruption allegations.

Ngilu fell-out with Uhuru after the sacking claiming that she was a sacrificial lamb.

She defended herself against the graft allegations and was cleared by the courts.

Ngilu later dumped Uhuru and joined forces with opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka.

In the August 8, 2017 elections, Ngilu supported NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

Raila lost the elections to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Despite their past political differences, Ngilu and Uhuru are in good terms, courtesy of the famous March 9 handshake.

Ngilu has been quoted saying that she will work with Uhuru’s government for development purposes.
