A video of Tanzanian no-nonsense President John Pombe Magufuli encouraging his ministers to smoke bhang has excited many Kenyans on social media.
He says that if this is what they require to be able to confront 'lazy' contractors dragging government projects with courage, they can smoke it.
In the video that has since gone viral, Magufuli, however, warns his cabinet members to smoke the weed privately so that they do not encourage other 'wananchi' from following suit.
Bhang is illegal in Tanzania as it is the case in Kenya and many other African countries.
"I am encouraging the minister here and other officials to be very strict. If you can smoke the bhang from Njombe so that you become bold, go ahead. However, smoke it in private so that citizens do not follow suit," Magufuli is quoted saying Kiswahili during a water project launch in Njombe Region, Southern Tanzania.
He adds: "That way, when you go to inspect projects, the engineers and the contractors will do a thorough job."
Kenyans on social media platforms have shared the video widely calling for the legalization of marijuana in Kenya which is commonly sold in the black market across the country.
Magufuli is due to face the Tanzanian voters at the ballot next year to seek a second and last term as president and, therefore, completion of pending government-sponsored projects is definitely a matter of urgency.
