Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has maintained that he will not support push to amend the 2010 constitution.
The Jubilee MP says that the push to amend the law is not genuine and that Kenyans are not ready for it.
Duale further claims that those pushing to amend the law are bargaining for power in 2022.
The National Assembly Leader of Majority further says that the referendum is aimed at reducing and merging some counties in North Eastern.
North Eastern leaders have since vowed to reject the referendum push.
However, political pundits note that Duale could find himself in isolation as more leaders including some from the ruling Jubilee Party support referendum push.
According to political analyst Peter Ngure, Duale could be forced to support the referendum.
Ngure says that Deputy President William Ruto’s U-turn to support the referendum left Duale in the dark.
“Duale will have no option but to follow the majority as far as the referendum is concerned,” he said.
The analyst notes that as much as Duale is raising serious issues against the referendum, the interests of the masses is what matters.
The analyst further says that the Council of Governors (COG) decision to support referendum further leaves Duale in the ‘cold’.
Ngure says that referendum could finish Duale politically if he is not careful.
Last week, political commentator Mutahi Ngunyi said that Duale could find himself as an MCA if the referendum push sails through.
Ngunyi in his weekly show the 5th Estate said that majority of Kenyans are for a referendum to change the country’s governance structure.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has been quoted saying that referendum push is unstoppable, noting that it was part of his unity deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the famous March 9 handshake.
