Kwale County Woman Representative Zuleikha Juma has challenged the Jubilee government to stop the increased rate of foreign borrowing.
She said the government has borrowed more than it can pay, therefore over-burdening the taxpayers who are not even benefiting from the borrowed funds.
Citing the multi billion Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the ODM lawmaker indicated that the government borrowed funds for its construction yet the railway is not benefiting the common citizen in any way.
"The government must tame its appetite for foreign debt to avoid the debt trap and to do away with costly projects that do not add value to the economy. The situation is getting worse, and it appears the country is heading towards an economic crisis," she said.
According to her, President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee government has invested huge resources on infrastructure yet they have failed to initiate efforts to widen the capital base.
The lawmaker further cited cases of corruption and misappropriation of public funds in government institutions, saying irresponsible spending and those stealing from public coffers should be tamed.
This comes following the introduction of 16% VAT on fuel, a move that has sparked public outcry.
President Kenyatta intervened and proposed that the tax should be slashed to 8%.
