Here are the instances where the region stopped functioning and came to a grinding halt.

October 26, 2017

This is the day Luo Nyanza made history for preventing the presidential vote as had been ordered by the Supreme Court after annulling President Uhuru Kenyatta's August reelection.

Under the orders of opposition leader Raila Odinga, who doubles up as the region's political kingpin, residents blocked any election exercise in most parts if the Luo counties.

December 27, 2007

This was the date of the nation's bloodiest presidential election which saw then sitting President Mwai Kibaki secure controversial re-election against his main challenger and former ally Raila Odinga.

It was followed by skirmishes that brought businesses and operations to a halt in Luo Nyanza and other regions. 

Kisumu, the Nyanza headquarters, was turned into a battle zone for protesters and anti-riot police.

This had everything to with Raila's claims that he was rigged out and this being his bedrock, his supporters took to the streets in protest to lament the alleged forceful snatching of his victory.

February 5, 1994

All roads in the entire nation led to Nyamira Kang'o, Bondo, Siaya, for the burial of the nation's founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga

Leaders from across the nation gathered at Kang'o Ka Jaramogi for the burial which was attended by over 300, 000 people. a hundred bulls were slaughtered.

People from Kisumu County accompanied the motorcade of over 300 vehicles escorting Oginga for 33 kilometres from Awasi in Muhoroni on foot.

It was a sad day for a great leader had passed on.
