Residents of Borangi in Nyamira County are mourning the death of two boys who died while swimming in a river on Wednesday.
Witnesses said the two went to a local river to swim but met their death.
"They were taking care of cattle at a grazing field near a river when they decided to swim. Unfortunately, they drowned in water and died," said Immaculate Moraa.
Moraa said efforts by members of the public to rescue them were in vain.
"There is currently a lot of water in the river because the region has been experiencing heavy rains. Residents who responded to the alarm raised were not able to rescue the deceased," she added.
Ken Nyaoga, area local chief warned parents against sending their children to graze alone in dangerous areas.
"It is sad that we lost the two after they abandoned the cattle and went swimming in the river. Parents should ensure good safety of their children during this festive season," he said.
The administrator said the bodies of the two were retrieved from the river and taken to Nyamira County hospital morgue.
