Kisii women representative Janet Ong’era, has criticised the County Assembly for violating nominated women MCAs’ constitutional rights by gaging them.
The women representative decried the move by the assembly to allegedly enact a legislation barring women from contributing to any motion while in session.
Kisii county assembly has a total of 26 nominated women MCAs out of 71. Only one woman was elected.
Ong’era who spoke in Kisii town during the distribution of sanitary towels to county schools pointed out that “The women MCAs are dully nominated through a political party and they have a role to play in legislation.”
Ong’era, asked Governor James Ongwae to intervene on the matter at a time when the dignity of the women leaders was at stake.
The women rep gave the county assembly speaker, David Kombo, two weeks to repeal the alleged offending legislation or face an onslaught of women countrywide including a protest to the house.
Kisii county assembly’s move followed exclusion of the nominated women MCAs from participation in the house’s budget process.
On provision of sanitary towels to the girl-child, the women rep said it was geared towards creating a stress-free environment in their education.
She cited enhancement of hygienic standards, molding, and mentorship as some of the objectives the national government implemented to empower the girl-child.
