Detectives from CID on Friday arrested First Lady Naomi Nyagarama's brother, Mr Hillary Obutu over unpaid Sh300, 000 he owes a businessman following a deal that may have gone wrong.
Officers in plain clothes descended on Mr Obutu outside the County Assembly offices in Nyamira and dragged him to Kisii where he was arraigned before a Chief Magistrate for failure to pay debt.
According to another victim who spoke in confidence, Mr Obutu owes several residents having promised to help them secure jobs but failed to deliver as agreed.
"It's just one of us who organised for his arrest. He has been on the run. Initially, we had agreed to solve the matter out of court but he is not abiding by it. We shall ensure that he's jailed," he said.
Mr Wilkins Ochoki, the lawyer representing the complaints, said his clients ought to be paid in time. He said Mr Oburu risks 6 months imprisonment should he fail to clear.
"He has one month to clear the mess or he serves six months imprisonment. He has been committed to civil jail and we shall not give up," he said.
In January, several county residents petitioned County Secretary Erick Onchana to stop Obutu's salary for absconding duties for months. He was on the run following accumulated debts.
Sources have hinted that Mr Obutu's name has been expunged from the payroll and he's no longer a county employee. At some point, he clobbered a security officer working in the county.
