Kisii County Governor James Ongwae, has promised residents on the plan that is underway to make Kisii Referral Hospital a 'Kenyatta National Hospital' in the region, through a partnership with the administration of Kisii University.
Ongwae said this in Kisii on Wednesday in a meeting where the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, led by Prof. George Magoha toured the Hospital.
"Kisii University has applied to start a Medical School and they are basically looking at the availability of enough facilities. We have increased the hospital beds, we have a new mortuary whose capacity has increased from 20 bodies to 100 bodies. It is for them now to go and do research," the governor said.
"On my own part as a governor, I would want to tell Kenyans that we have done much in this hospital and this is not a hospital for Kisii County but for all Kenyans. It is now going to be the 'Kenyatta National Hospital of the region," he added.
According to Prof. Magoha, the Hospital had all the facilities needed for accreditation. However, he asked the governor to be patient as the board will have to scrutinize the facilities and get back to the feedback about the accreditation.
"The hospital is in the right track going by the fact that they have increased bed capacity by 250. It has employed 150 general practitioners according to the governor and 24 specialists which is not something you will get in other counties," Prof. Magoha said.
"We have seen the quality of the work in regard to the application to be accredited. The members of the board will look at certain facilities and we will get back to you, your Excellency," Magoha added.
