The vocal politician has in several cases been a ‘guest’ of the state over incitement and hate speech allegations.

Muthama, a close ally of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has never been shy of criticizing the government.

In June 2018, Muthama was among eight politicians who were arrested and locked in police cells for days over hate speech and incitement remarks.

Muthama alongside seven other politicians were locked up at Pangani and Muthaiga police stations for several days as police investigated hate speech claims against them.

His wife Jemimah Muthama was turned away when he brought fresh clothes for her husband at Pangani police station.

No one visited the MPs at the cells.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was turned away when he visited the politicians at the cells.

The politicians were later released after the court granted them bond and bail.

Muthama has often accused the state of allegedly instigating his arrests to humiliate him.

The former senator has since taken a low political profile after he opted not to contest in the 2017 general election.
