Kenyan police on Saturday arrested five Ugandan police officers for allegedly breaching security protocol after they entered the country without permission.
The officers were allegedly pursuing a truck ferrying contraband into Kenya.
The Busia Kenya County Police Commander John Nyoike has confirmed the arrest. He said that the police intercepted the five without their knowledge after the entered the country through Alupe and Buteba.
It, however, remains unclear at what exact time the arrest took place.
“They were intercepted after they unknowingly entered into Kenya through Buteba and Alupe as they pursued the truck carrying illegal goods,” he said.
He added that the officers found themselves in trouble because of unmarked boundaries between the two nations.
The five Ugandan officers were forced to stop at Korinda police checkpoint along Busia-Kisumu highway before the Kenyan side took action against them. The security agents were arrested after travelling five kilometres into the Kenyan soil.
The security personnel are based at the Tororo Police Station in Busia District. They were, however, freed hours later after the arrest.
They belong to the Field Forces Unit, which is a special department in the police service in Uganda.
The police from the Kenyan side also impounded the patrol trucks of the agents during the incident. The officers were disarmed before they were taken to the police station.
