With his political future hanging on the balance after his loss to Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in the 2017 gubernatorial race, former Senator Hassan Omar has seemingly taken a new route to political redemption- leaving rivals in suspense.
Omar who took Mombasa politics by storm in 2013 when he floored veterans in the Senatorial race went on to make a gamble in 2017 when he challenged Joho- a move that backfired, leaving him on the knife-edge.
The dismissal of his petition by the High Court added to his political misery. He appealed the ruling but later on decided to withdraw the case. And since then, he has left opponents guessing on his next move.
With the former Senator now playing third fiddle in Jubilee politics in Mombasa, behind Suleiman Shahbal and Najib Balala, his future in the ruling party has also been subject to speculations especially having failed to land any government position so far.
On the political scene, Omar has taken a background role. And even with many political activities going on in the region, Omar has just opted to be a spectator. His game plan remains a mystery.
Is he reading the mood on the ground before making the next political move? Or has he just taken a sabbatical after a grueling 2017 campaign? Whatever the case, opponents should watch Omar’s political strategy carefully.
