The Kalenjin community, a majority of who live in the Rift Valley region, is well known globally for producing best athletes. In fact, a good number of record breakers in the world of athletics today are from this community.
However, things seem to be changing as brilliant footballers are slowly starting to emerge from this region that is home of athletes.
Football was formally characterised by Luhyahs, Luos, Kambas, Kikuyus and to some extent the 'Coastarians' but it's becoming an all-around game due to the introduction of these three gallant Kalenjin warriors;
Nicolas Kipkirui
Kipkirui is playing for one of the biggest clubs in East Africa, Gor Mahia. His star started to shine when he was in Zoo Kericho before completing a switch to K'Ogalo during the last summer transfers.
He had his name written in Gor Mahia's scorebooks when he netted the 3rd goal against Zamalek and lately a consolation goal against Petro Atletico of Angola in which the reigning Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions lost 2-1. Kipkurui is however yet to feature in the national team, Harambee Stars.
Wesley Kemboi
Kemboi plays for Western Stima. The speedy striker has shone brightly for the power men being one of the longest serving footballers in that team.
He won several player of the month awards during the last campaign in KPL. Wesley has capped for the national team, Harambee stars twice. He was present when Kenya drew 1-1 with Nigeria in Nigeria.
Joseph Ruto
He formally played for Tusker FC before crossing over to Tanzania's money bags, Azam FC. Ruto came back and joined Bandari FC and also spent a season with Posta Rangers before joining Mathare United back in 2011. He featured twice for the national team.
In 2013, the retired goalkeeper was rumoured to be close to joining Thika United's technical bench.
These players are just an indicator that Kalenjins have diverse talents other than racing.
