Coast rights group Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri) and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko Maitha Omar, was shot on Monday at a close range in the head and shoulder after being accused of stealing goats.

Speaking during the burial of the boy at a cemetery in Mtongwe as per the Islamic rituals on Tuesday, Mboko said cases of extra-judicial killings were on the rise in Mombasa and that it was time for perpetrators to face the law.

Mboko warned of possible demonstrations to force redeployment of the officer who killed the deceased if Haji fails to prosecute him.

"If the DPP fails to prosecute the officer, we will hold a demonstration to have him removed from here," said the lawmaker on Tuesday, after the family dismissed claims that their boy was a criminal.

They wondered how a mentally unstable person could be accused of stealing and later be shot at a close range.

On his part, Francis Auma, Muhuri's rapid response officer said they were conducting investigations to gather sufficient evidence that will see the 'killer' cop charged.

He said any suspected criminal should be arrested and arraigned in court rather than being killed.

Speaking following an arrest of a suspected criminal at Mwembe Tayari on Tuesday, Mombasa County Commander Johnson Ipara said security had been heightened across Mombasa to ensure no criminal is spared.
