Plot to impeach powerful Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i is intact and nothing shall stop MPs from executing their constitutional mandate, Belgut MP Nelson Koech has said.
A section of politicians allied to DP William Ruto are said to be unhappy with the interior minister, who they accuse of frustrating their movements across the country.
In an interview with the Standard, Koech, a close lieutenant of Dr Ruto, said they have solid grounds to hound the minister out of office, adding that they 'are not petty'.
“Some of us believe that CS Matiang’i has overstepped his mandate and I can tell you that there is a lot of consultation going on,” said Mr Koech.
“There are a lot of issues, not necessarily about the fake gold. It should also come out clear that we are not petty to target an individual if we don’t have any grounds,” he added.
Already, the move has caused storm within the political divide, with legislators allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, daring the plotters to table the motion.
Minority Leader John Mbadi on Monday said MPs will not support motions which are anchored on flimsy grounds. Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has also accused Dr Ruto's team of a witch-hunt.
Speaking at his office at Parliament Buildings, Mr Mbadi warned that the minority MPs in Parliament would oppose the motion, "which is anchored on flimsy grounds if it ever finds itself on the floor of the House. People don’t serve in the Cabinet because one likes them, they serve at the pleasure of the president for the good of the people.
Dr Matiang'i was elevated by President Uhuru Kenyatta in January to chair powerful National Development and Communication Cabinet Committee, a move seen as a ploy to undermine Ruto.
