Despite the March 9th 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga receiving praises all over, some people might be uncomfortable with it.
Deputy President Dr William Ruto has openly attacked those politicians he says are using the handshake to achieve bad motives and interfere with the government’s development agenda.
The DP’s camp might be becoming unease with the post-handshake effects due to the following three reasons;
a) They feel that the war on graft is one sided
The war on graft has taken another turn. The DP has accused the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji and DCI boss George Kinoti for being used as puppets on the fight against graft. The DP seems to be uncomfortable with the direction that the handshake has taken.
I opine here that the DP’s home turf is seemingly worried about the manner in which opposition chief Raila Odinga has capitalized on the handshake to take part in major government decisions.
The president on his part has praised the DCI and DPP on their endless efforts to deal with corruption in the country.
Some close allies of the DP have openly disagreed with the manner in which the war on graft is being channelled towards the DP’s home turf.
Kapseret lawmaker Oscar Sudi who is the DP’s confidante recently hit out at the government’s investigative agencies for bringing nepotism in the fight against corruption.
b) They hold different views on the referendum issue
The DP has dismissed those pushing for constitutional amendments that advocate for the creation of more government positions.
On their part, Kenyatta and Raila want more government positions to be created including the prime minister’s position.
c) They feel Rift Valley is not getting maximum attention in terms of executing development programs and allocation of government funds.
Besides, a number of leaders from the North Rift want the president to fully declare his support for the DP’s 2022 presidential ambitions. This is something the president is yet to do.
