Acres of a forest at the popular Menengai Crater have been razed by a furious fire that broke out on Wednesday.
The fire, whose cause is still unknown, has been eating dry shrubs in the area as firefighters from the county government are yet to show up.
Residents of Kirima and Milimani, who neighbour the forest, have been using twigs to fight the fire but to no avail.
"It broke out on Wednesday and by Thursday, acres had been consumed by the fire. We fear the fire will spread to out property if firefighters continue to ignore us," Fredrick Kairegi, a resident of Kirima, said.
The residents called on the county government of Nakuru to respond to the situation in order to avoid more damage.
"We are asking you to please inform the county government again and push them to come. We need them to put it (the fire) out," Grace Njeri said.
Residents claim the fire might have been started by charcoal burners in the forest who run illegal activities.
George Kamau, 70, however, said the fire burns the forest every year and therefore 'there is nothing new to worry about'.
"It is caused by demons which were condemned to the crater. It is nothing new to worry about, the demons lit the fire every year and residents here know it," Kamau said.
