Deputy President William Ruto has sent a stern warning to lazy chiefs.
Ruto said chiefs should stop being lax in their duties and represent the government at the grassroots.
“As government we will not allow lazy people to derail development. Chiefs should be good ambassadors representing the government in the villages by ensuring our people are living in peace, unity and harmony,” he said.
He said lazy chiefs will be sacked and be replaced immediately.
Speaking on Thursday at Riogongera village in Kisii County, the DP said chiefs must be at the forefront of fighting crime in their areas of administration and surrender criminals to police for court processing.
“Criminals should not be given room to terrorize our people. Chiefs have free motorbikes which they should use to traverse their areas of administration and flush out criminals. Laziness among government officers will not be condoned,” he stated.
He called on members of the public to report any chief who is not properly executing their mandate so that he or she can be sacked.
The DP reiterated that illegal trade such as selling of illicit brews is an offence which is punishable by law and anyone engaging in dubious business will face the law.
He said the government is giving loans so that youth and women can start legal businesses to boost their living standards.
