Mombasa County Government has been faulted for failing to support the growth of the real estate sector.
According to a recent report by realtors, real estate agents have a tough time selling their property due to poor infrastructure especially the drainage system.
Alamin Siwa Somo, a real estate agent, blamed the county, led by Governor Ali Hassan Joho saying it has become hard to sell property or even rent it out due to poor infrastructure.
“This is not the first time I have lost a good business deal in Kisauni courtesy of the rainy seasons. It is impossible to convince one to buy, leave alone lease a building in the area during this period,” Somo said as quoted by the Standard.
Some of the worst-hit areas are Mwandoni, Mtopanga, Mshomoroni, Bakarani and Mlaleo in Kisauni sub-county.
Somo is the proprietor of Shekha Enterprises. He stated that rainy season are the deal breakers due to poor planning by the county government.
He expressed his disappointment with the constant collapse of drainage and sewerage systems every rainy season.
Real estate investor, Cytonn Investments, stated last year that outdated county planning and insufficient infrastructure are some of the reasons this sector is not growing in the port county. This finding supports Somo’s concerns.
“The drainage and sewerage systems collapse every rainy season. Concern has been raised constantly but the County Government turns a deaf ear. We have reached a stage where it is not wise to invest in real estate in this locality which is unfortunate given its huge potential and close proximity to a town,” he said.
