Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo insists that be prevailed upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to withdraw his support for Musalia Mudavadi in 2013.
Facing charges against humanity in the International Criminal Court, President Uhuru Kenyatta had given in to pressure from Mt Kenya power brokers.
According to Mr Kabogo, the power brokers were hiding in the Hague predicaments in favour of Mudavadi but only targeted Uhuru instead of DP William Ruto as well.
In a lengthy meeting at Uhuru's house, Kabogo revealed, he warned Uhuru that Mt Kenya people would be mad at him and probably end up rejecting him in future outings.
For the power brokers narrative to work, he told Uhuru, also deputy president William Ruto had to give out his proposed position since he was also facing charges at the Hague.
"President Uhuru Kenyatta was put under immense pressure to support Mudavadi. As a friend, I decided to know why he made such a decision. I called a couple of guys and we went to his house. We finally managed to see him.I remember also Ruto came in and I was upset with him.
"They had given out Kenyatta's candidacy but retained his as deputy. My position was, if it was about Hague, both of them were facing charges. They should have given out both positions. I told Uhuru the Kikuyus would slaughter him. The people of the mountain would have not listened," he said.
After the lengthy meeting, Uhuru renounced his support for Mudavadi, arguing that he had been misled by 'satan'. He made the announcement after meeting Kabogo, Ruto and four others.
Mr Mudavadi, who finished third in the polls, would later accuse Uhuru and Ruto of duping him. In 2017, he worked with Raila Odinga, in the presidential elections that were nullified by the Supreme Court.
Further, Kabogo said, Mt Kenya brokers were raiding on claims that other communities would not back a Kikuyu since Mwai Kibaki was from the community.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, who went on to win the polls, is set to retire in 2022. At the moment, a host of politicians from Mt Kenya have lined up to succeed him.
