In an interview on Sunday, the residents noted that the former Prime Minister deserves the post, coming on the backdrop of his handshake with President Uhuru Kenya on March 09, this year.

Here are their views:

“He deserves the post. He has all the political experience needed to succeed in his new role,” said Victor Otieno a motorcycle operator.

“Nampongeza sana. Wacha Baba aitwe Baba,” said Eunice Akinyi in reference to Raila Odinga’s Baba (Father) nickname.

It translates to “I congratulate him. Let Baba be called Baba.”

"I'm glad that African Union has recognised Raila's efforts, congratulations sir," Otieno Odhiambo opined.

"The post is bigger than Prime Minister, he will now be controlling resources in the continent. I'm happy for him," Elizabeth Aoko noted.

However, some residents opposed the new appointment saying it will limit Odinga’s involvement in local and national politics.

“Raila is the ODM party leader. This appointment may end up weakening the Orange Party,” said Vitalis Ouma.

“I do not at all support this appointment. It may lead to Baba not vying for Presidency again in 2022,” Grace Onyango said.

"This is a trick to get him out of Kenya's politics," John Okello stated.

"I don't know what to say. He has been our hero, does this mean he is quitting politics?" Joan Akoth posed.

Odinga has already accepted the appointment and thanked the African Union Commission for the appointment.
