Two children aged 10 years have died in Seme, Kisumu county after being bitten by a stray dog.
Speaking on Tuesday, Kisumu County Executive Committee member for Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Gilchrest Okuom said the incidents happened in Reru, Seme Sub-County.
Okuom, noted that the first victim, a boy, was rushed to the hospital after the bite, but was only given an anti-tetanus jab as the parents could not afford treatment.
The county executive further noted that the boy later developed complications leading to his death.
"While at home, the boy developed nervous signs and when taken back to hospital he passed on," Okuom told Capital News.
In a separate incident, the same dog attacked a girl, and inflicted her with the rabies virus.
Okuom said the girl was put on anti-rabies medication for three days, and later discontinued due to her family's inability to pay for the treatment.
"After learning of the death of the first boy, the girl was taken back to hospital to continue with the injection. She was given the third injection and after a short while, developed signs and passed on last week," he added.
The officer decried increased cases of rapid dog bites in the region, adding that the county leadership has ordered all public health facilities be stocked with proper medicine to counter such incidences.
He added that the county has rolled out a vaccination program, and is also in the process of reducing the population of stray dogs in the sub county.
