Veteran politician and former Subukia lawmaker Koigi Wa Wamwere has faulted a section of politicians opposed to the rumoured referendum.
Speaking on Saturday evening, Koigi, a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga said that the referendum push is on course and is actually being worked on.
He faulted politicians led by Deputy President William Ruto who have been saying that it will not see the light of day, promising him a shocker in the near future.
"Katiba inakuja na hivi punde tutashtukia imefika a tutaambiwa tupige kura ya maoni sasa (it will soon be here, it will come as sudden attack)," he said.
Koigi was speaking in Nakuru, during an interview on Radio Sauti ya Mwananchi's Cheche show.
However, he said that the motive of the constitutional reforms might not be of national importance and are instead aimed at benefiting only to people.
According to Koigi, the changes seek to prolong the political lives of Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta both of whom, he said, are keen on being in power after the 2022 elections.
"Wanatafuta njia ya kubakia siasani, mmoja kama rais na mwingine kama waziri mkuu (the plan is to make one of them the President and the other the Prime Minister)," he claimed.
This comes at s time when Uhuru has on two different occasions sided with Raila on the constitutional reforms, arguing that the nation needs a more inclusive governance system.
Raila kicked off the debate after their truce early last year, but Ruto has remained opposed to the plan to among others, expand the executive to house more individuals.
Koigi crossed over to Raila's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party after losing in the Nakuru Senatorial race on the Jubilee Party ticket in the 2017 polls.
