The MPs led by Dadaab MP Dahir Duale asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene after the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) cancelled the results for 3,427 students from the region.

The leaders said President Kenyatta should intervene to ensure the future of the students especially from marginalised counties is not affected by the decision from Knec.

Speaking at Parliament buildings, MP Dahir questioned why there were mass irregularities during last year’s exams and the exams were supervised by government agencies and Knec.

President Kenyatta was asked to have Knec rescind its decision to cancel the results saying that education plays a key role in keeping North Eastern youth from being radicalized and joining criminal groups.

“Knec had assured that they were prepared to tackle any malpractice and that there would be no exam cheating. It’s unfortunate that some students will not be able to get their results because of mass irregularities,” said Mr Dahir.

Isiolo Woman Representative Rehema Jaldesa claimed that the mass cancellation of results is a deliberate negative profiling of the region which is marginalised.

“This region which is already marginalized is being targeted and we want to know why. We can’t allow our children to suffer,” she said.

The cancellation of the KCSE results affected 44 centres in Garissa, Wajir, Mandera and Isiolo counties.

Knec Chairperson Professor George Magoha had said that investigations revealed that the 3,427 candidates were involved in examination irregularities during last year’s examinations.

Mr Magoha said some of the irregularities noted during investigations include identical errors in calculations, correct responses after incorrect working, identical wording often with unusual identical grammar or vocabulary, and numerous identical corrections by a group of candidates.
