It is a day to Christmas, and most people around the world are waiting to celebrate the day in their unique ways.
People back in the village are no exception.
Here are the things that make Christmas memorable in most Kenyan villages:
1.Christmas carols
Christmas carols have started filling the air back in the village.
"Jingle bells" is one of my favourites.
It takes me back to my childhood days.
It hyped the Christmas mood, increasing my anticipation of this annual day.
The day hit a climax, as all radio stations played every conceivable song that alludes to Christmas.
2.New clothes
As a child, I would feel shortchanged when our parents failed to buy us Christmas clothes.
The times they did, they bought them early so that they could avoid high prices as the day drew near.
I would almost bow to these new clothes, trying them on when my parents were not around.
When the day came, I would don them with pride, as though I had been walking naked all my life.
3.Food
The village menu is restricted, for the better part of the year, to ugali, "githeri'' or potatoes.
But on Christmas day, a sheep has to be slaughtered, bundles of wheat flour, several kilos of rice, and drinks bought.
This is a once in a year feast, as we thank the Lord for sending us his son, Jesus Christ.
4.The happy mood
During Christmas, everyone seems to make a special effort to be happy.
After all, a saviour was born to take away our burdens.
Strict parents become lax, allowing their children even to overeat.
5.The new year around the corner
It is always a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
The two special days are close together, making the days between the two all special.
As a matter of fact, these days ‘fly’ like a supersonic jet.
Today it's Christmas, and the next is the new year.
