What colour of clothes do you wear when going for a job interview? This plays a major role in how your possible employer perceives you.
Sussy Ngaina, an Image consultant and Public Relations lecturer at a local university in Nairobi says that colours people wear to formal and informal job interviews determine whether they stand a chance of being hired or not.
She says that what one chooses to wear communicates a lot about the person.
Ngaina notes that conservative colours such as black, blue, grey and brown are best when meeting someone for the first time in a professional setting.
She observes that colours that signal creativity like orange are too loud for an interview.
The image consultant advises job seekers to wear the following colours for formal job interviews;
1. Blue
It is one of the best colours to wear for a job interview as it portrays and inspires confidence.
2. Grey
Ngaina observes that grey communicates and portrays independence.
She says that people who wear grey are perceived as self-independent.
3. Black
The image consultant notes that while black colour may be perceived unapproachable, wearing it the right way and correctly portrays a person who is capable of leadership.
It also portrays glamour and inclusivity.
4. White
It portrays calmness and confidence. People who wear white to interviews are perceived as organised and stand a higher chance of being hired.
5. Brown
Brown color reflects warmth, dependency, reliability, and safety.
She notes that people who wear brown are considered as trust-able and easy going hence higher chances of being hired.
6. Red
It portrays power and it is the best to wear when trying to impress or persuade.
Red also portrays courage, energy, and excitement.
Ngaina, however, discourages job seekers from wearing creative colours like yellow, green and orange.
She says that these colours attract attention and don’t show trust or commitment which are key in job interviews.
When going for your next interview chose what you wear correctly.
