Ronaldo's Portugal was beaten 2-1 by Uruguay while Argentina, which was captained by Messi, left world's greatest tournament after suffering a 4-3 defeat in the hands of France.

While reacting to the matches played on Saturday, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale said Ronaldo and Messi, touted as the greatest players on the planet, had failed to inspire their teams to shine at the World Cup and it was now time for the duo to retire from international football.

The two are not expected to play at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to age as Ronaldo would be at 37 and Messi 35.

In a tweet, Khalwale predicted that Brazil would win the trophy and it's captain Neymar da Silva Santos Junior take home the golden boot.

The politician added that France's Kylian Mbappe, who has netted three goals so far, would emerge number two in the list of goal scorers.

"Argentina is gone and so is Portugal. That effectively marks the end of the Messi/Ronaldo old order. Neymar will be crowned number one with Mbappe following a close second," Khalwale posted.
