National Assembly Majority Leader John Mbadi has said that his recent constitutional amendment proposal has nothing to do with Deputy President William Ruto.
The Suba South MP earlier in the week proposed changes to the Public Officer Ethics Act and is seeking to have fundraiser contributions capped at Sh100,000.
This has largely been seen as another of the opposition's attempts to tame Ruto, who has been crisscrossing the nation almost on a daily basis giving millions in charitable initiatives.
However, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Chair on Thursday said that his proposal is only aiming at enhancing accountability among public officials.
He acknowledged getting complains from Ruto's side that he is targeting him, denying the claims and saying that the DP doesn't feature anywhere in his proposal.
“I have heard supporters of Deputy President dismissing my amendments. I am telling them that this amendment has not one, but all public officers, in mind,” Mbadi was quoted by the Daily Nation.
The vocal MP said that the link between harambees and corruption has always been a hot discussion, and he should not, therefore, be blamed for seeking to tame graft.
Mbadi also said that he has no issue with people giving more than the proposed amount, on the condition that they explain how they got the money being contributed.
“You can contribute Sh1 million or even more so long as you tell the [Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission] the source of your money,” he added.
The amendment is yet to be tabled for consideration on the floor of the house.
