His name is Ali Bunow Korane, a first-time governor who upstaged an incumbent to become Garissa County's executive on a Jubilee ticket.
During the heated campaigns, he had projected himself to the masses as a soft-spoken operator who had a keen understanding of what ailed his county.
Armed with ideas on how to turn around Garissa County, he made his pitch to the county's electorate and ended up being elected.
Not much of the public had heard about him even as governor until he hit headlines about over a week ago when he was arrested for questioning over the shooting of a former Garissa County Finance County Executive.
It is a story that has left the Kenyan public reeling.
Suspects in police custody say they acted on behalf of the governor.
A relative of the governor and a person believed to be Korane's bodyguard were arrested last week.
Korane has denied any involvement in the assassination plot, saying on his Twitter feed that he surrendered himself to police officers as a law-abiding citizen and was never arrested as reported by a slew of media outlets.
Should the governor be found to have been involved in the plot, that could very well mean years behind bars and the end of his job as governor.
