Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) party leader Kalonzo Musyoka remains the most unpredictable man in Kenya’s mainstream political arena courtesy of his last minute and unexpected political moves.
And as the 2022 presidential race nears, Kalonzo is now a man at crossroads and whose next step is most probably unknown even to himself.
A 2-time running-mate of opposition leader Raila Odinga, the former Vice President is very unlikely to team up with the former Premier should he (Raila) decide to give it another try.
After their twin losses in 2013 and 2017, it will be very unreasonable for Kalonzo to escort Raila once again.
Judging by Raila's long-time ambition for the seat, it is as well unrealistic for Kalonzo to anticipate Raila's backing should they stick together, relegating Raila from his list of possible combinations.
The other remaining option is Deputy President William Ruto who, however, seems to have already planned his next move and decided on his possible running mate, ruling out any possibilities of housing latecomers.
Ruto is also under pressure to appoint his running mate from the Central Kenya region, meaning that though Kalonzo’s endorsement will be welcome, he will not receive any major recognition in Ruto’s government.
And with politicians known to only join a side where their interest is catered for, Kalonzo cannot possibly join this side as the biggest slot he can get is a ministerial seat.
This, for a man who has his eyes on the presidency, is not an option.
At this juncture, he only remains with an option of personally vying for the seat, a move that might, however, see him sustain a terrible loss.
Though he has many options on who to choose as his running-mate, Kalonzo is aware that the two control more than half of the nations’ electorate.
Consequently, they will share the nation among themselves, leaving him close to nothing, and, therefore, rendering him a loser.
The two also enjoy the backing of most of the nation's most influential political figures, leaving Kalonzo to decide on who among the remaining less-relevant politicians can best suit him.
This makes Kalonzo a confused man whose next move only time will reveal.
