Mombasa gubernatorial seat is the focal point with politicians allied to opposition and government eyeing to succeed Governor Hassan Joho.
Vocal sitting MPs who are also Joho’s allies are lobbying for endorsement in 2022.
Political analyst Peter Ngure observes that the Mombasa governor's seat will attract much attention in 2022.
He says that Joho’s pick as a successor is further likely to heighten political temperatures.
“Joho’s close allies expect him to endorse them for the top seat,” he said in an interview on Wednesday.
According to the analyst, here are four politicians to watch out in Mombasa in the 2022 gubernatorial succession politics.
1. Mishi Mboko
She is the Likoni MP serving her first term in office.
Mboko was previously Mombasa Women Representative elected on an ODM ticket.
She is vocal and a close ally of ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
Political analysts describe her as the ‘force’ to watch out in Mombasa politics in 2022.
The vocal female MP is also among politicians likely to contest for the Mombasa governor seat in 2022.
2. Hassan Omar
He is the former Mombasa senator.
He unsuccessfully contested for the Mombasa governor's seat in the August 8, 2017, general election.
Omar ditched Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party in favour of Jubilee party after losing bid for the governor's seat.
Omar has hinted on contesting for the Mombasa governor seat in 2022.
Political analysts say that Omar is likely to influence how Mombasa will vote in 2022 especially in the presidential election.
3. William Kingi
He is the current Mombasa County deputy governor.
Kingi is also a close ally of Governor Hassan Joho.
He is described as a smart and strategic politician.
4. Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir
He is the Mvita MP serving his second term.
The ODM lawmaker is also a close ally of Joho.
Nassir is also a close confidant of ODM Party leader Raila Odinga.
Political analysts say that he could be the next Mombasa and Coast region’s political kingpin.
