In a shocking twist of events, Nigeria’s national Football team captain Obi Mikel has revealed that his father was kidnapped hours before their clash with Argentina.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN, the talented player said that it was one of the toughest moments in his footballing career. 

The players said that the after kidnappers demanded 10 million Nigerian naira (around Sh2.8 million). Mikel said that he could think of raising such a huge amount of money at such a time. 

He, however, said that he had no choice but to stand up for his country during the competition. Obi, who led the team, despite losing 2-1 to Argentina’s side under the stewardship of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi said that they gave it their best.

"I was confused. I did not know what to do, but in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down," Mikel said.

Nigeria and Senegal stood a better chance of proceeding to the next stage until they lost their last matches. All the African teams were failed to through the round of 16 stage during the competition still going on in Russia. 

The other African teams that featured at the competition were Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt.
