Two police officers were forced to run for their dear lives after they demanded Sh10,000 bribe from a local shopkeeper at Kiogoro area, Nyaribari Chache in Kisii County.
Boniface Ondari, the shopkeeper alleged that officers stormed his shop and told him they were inspecting the goods he sells to the locals.
"It was at 7 pm when the officers came to my shop and demanded to inspect my shop. The picked two packets of cigarettes and claimed that the cigarettes had expired," said Ondari.
Ondari said efforts to plead with the officers to forgive him didn't bore fruits.
"They handcuffed and frogmarched me outside. They asked me to give them Sh10,000 so that they can release me," he said.
Luckily, Ondari's wife identified as Kemunto raised alarm to attract members of the public.
"I heard Kemunto calling for help and I mobilized neighbours. We rushed to the shop armed with 'rungus'. The officers scampered for safety immediately we arrived at Ondari's shop," said Abel Okeyo, a neighbour.
Okeyo said the officers escaped into the darkness leaving Ondari with the handcuffs.
Kisii Central OCPD Francis Nguli confirmed the incident and said investigations is ongoing.
"The officers abandoned the suspect tied with the handcuffs. A probe is ongoing before a detailed report can be issued to the public," he said.
