On August 2, 2017, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto left Ukambani downhearted after the residents heckled them as they sought for their support to retain power.
Kenyatta was heckled by the public after he threatened to sack chiefs who engaged in the political campaigns.
The locals criticized the head of state for issuing a warning that the chiefs working against his government would face dire consequences.
Kenyatta had urged the residents to turn up in large numbers and re-elect him during the 2017 general elections.
The President who is serving his second and last term in office was left angered when a section of residents in attendance started expressing displeasure.
The residents chanted NASA songs as Kenyatta unsuccessfully tried to convince them to back his re-election.
Kenyatta told the locals he would win the elections with or without their support.
“We have come to ask for your votes but we are not forcing you to vote for us. You may vote for whoever you want but this time, I assure you we will beat Raila," Kenyatta said.
The statement did not augur well with a section of residents who faulted him for trying to ‘force’ chiefs to back his candidature during that time.
