The government will not stop at anything after rolling out the housing fund levy to be deducted from salaried Kenyans starting May this year.
According to Housing PS Charles Hinga, whilst the levy is mandatory to salaried Kenyans, it is also targetting the non-salaried citizens who have a steady income stream in the informal sector.
Hinga explained that those in the informal sector are also required to embrace and start making contributions to the scheme.
PS Hinga in an interview with KTN News on Tuesday night divulged that the non-salaried Kenyans are required to register so as to start making contributions through the Boma Yangu government portal.
"This housing levy is not only for salaried Kenyans. Those in the informal sector are expected to register at bomayangu.co.ke for monthly contributions to be made," advised PS Hinga.
He further cautioned that those who will not have enrolled for the monthly payments will not get houses from the government. He stated that at least 200, 000 Kenyans have already registered themselves on the Boma Yangu portal.
Hinga dismissed the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) following the stance that the government had failed to comply to court orders in its move to roll out the programme.
He stated that the matter had been duly settled by stakeholders such as COTU saying FKE was only an interested party.
"The government is not in contempt of court as it reached an agreement with COTU on the matter.FKE was only but an interested party," maintained Hinga.
On Monday, the government in a gazette notice announced they will begin deducting the 1.5% levy on salaries as from next month to fund the Housing Scheme under the President's Big Four Agenda.
FKE termed the notice as illegal; citing a court order it obtained earlier on suspending the process until May 20.
