Speaking at Athi River in Mavoko sub-county on Wednesday during the launch of police houses, Mutua said that the men in uniform contribute greatly to the safety and peace of mind of Kenyans and therefore deserve to be treated well.

"The reality is that for many years unlike their counterparts in Europe, Australia, Canada, the United States, Brazil, South Africa and other nations, our police officers have not been treated well and fairly especially when it comes to remuneration, benefits and housing," said Mutua.

The county boss acknowledged what the government has done to improve the welfare of the officers, but noted that the situation is still bad.

"My heart has always been torn when I see the living conditions of some of our officers. I have endeavoured as a citizen to built houses for police officers and have done so quietly in many parts of Kenya," he noted.

The vocal politician noted that even though security falls under the national government, the partnership between the Machakos County Government and the Ministry of Interior to improve the living standards of officers in Athi River will ensure residents get better services.

"If the economy cannot increase housing allowances for police officers, then it is not able to increase the housing allowances for MPs, governors or even the president," he said.

Governor Mutua had earlier opposed the increment in MPs' salaries saying it is ill-timed and Kenyans cannot afford it.

Mutua handed over the houses to Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.
