Kajwang says that governors must be quizzed by the committee on the 2017/2018 financial budget.

The Homa Bay Senator warns that action will be taken against county bosses who will skip the committee summons.

“Failure by governors to appear before the Senate Public Accounts Committee without reasonable cause shall attract the consequences spelt out in Section 19 of the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act,” Kajwang maintained.

Last week, the Council of Governors (CoG) raised reservations over the grilling by the Senate committee.

The Wycliffe Oparanya chaired CoG called for the suspension of the summons and told its members to boycott the summons over claims that a report from the Auditor General being used by the Senators has errors.

Oparanya said that governors will only appear before the Kajwang chaired committee after investigations are conducted to establish the truth about the Auditor-General reports.

According to Oparanya, the National Treasury has admitted that the budget reports for some counties had errors.

Two weeks ago, Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu was at pains to explain alleged Sh2 billion suspicious budget in his reports.

The Kiambu Governor said he was not aware of the suspicious budget even as pressure piled on him to explain how that happened.

It later emerged that other counties among them Kitui, Kakamega, Nyamira, Lamu and Kirinyaga had also suspicious budget allocations and spending.

The Senate's PAC has, however, maintained that governors must appear before the committee to shed light on audit queries despite concerns being raised against Auditor-General’s report.
