Embattled Migori Goveror Okoth Obado on Monday joined over 2000 remandees at the Nairobi Industrial Area remand Prison.

Obado was remanded after he pleaded not guilty to killing Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

High court Judge Jessie Lessit remanded him pending his bail hearing application scheduled for Tuesday (today).

Obado arrived at the Industrial Area Prison at 6.30 PM on Monday and was processed just like other remandees in detention.

According to a prison warden at the Nairobi Industrial Area Remand who requested for anonymity since he is not authorized to speak to the media, Governor Obado was booked at the famous Capital Offenses block.

The block houses remandees who are charged with capital offenses.

According to the warden, here is the daily normal routine for remands at the Remand Prison.

1. Breakfast

Remandees  wake at 6 AM daily and take their breakfast comprising either porridge or tea with two slices of bread at 6.30 AM.

2. Head count

After breakfast, a head count is conducted on all remandees as they prepare for court sessions.

4. Duties 

Before going to court, remandees are engaged in several duties among them sweeping and cleaning their cells rooms.

5. Court 

A prison truck then arrives at exactly 8 AM where remandees who have court hearings and mentions are ferried to the courts under tight security.

6. Lunch

The remandees who don’t have court sessions are served with lunch at exactly 12.30 PM.

The lunch comprises of ugali and vegetables mostly cabbage. The remandees also eat beans and rice.

The diet for remandees varies every day.

7. Visitation

Remandees are allowed to be visited by their relatives between 2 PM and 5 PM.

The visitation is only allowed for a maximum of 15 minutes and visitors are not allowed to carry electronic gadgets and food stuffs into the remand.

They (visitors) are however allowed to carry fresh clothing for their relatives in remand.

8. Dinner

Dinner at the remand is served at exactly 5.30 PM. The dinner often comprises of ugali and 'sukuma wiki' but the remandees sometimes get a luxury of eating meat.

The meals are served in plastic cups and metal plates.

The remandees eat with their hands since there is no luxury for spoons.

Activities at the remand prison closes at 6 PM as they retire to their various cell rooms awaiting activities for the next day.

The Officer In-Charge of Nairobi Industrial Prison Remand, Samuel Ruto says that no preferential treatment is given to remandees.

“All remandees are treated the same and are classified or grouped as per the charges they have been charged with in court,” he said in a phone interview.
