The youth in the country are faced with challenges of unemployment and Uasin Gishu county is not left behind on this problem.
Most youths who come out of their studies find no room for work but the county government of Uasin Gishu, under its governor Jackson Mandago has a big plan to these youths.
The county has set aside Sh150 million to support Internship programme for its youths. Speaking in Eldoret town on Friday Mandago said the initiative is meant to aid jobless youth from colleges, universities and other tertiary institutions.
“We want to build the careers of our youths through this programme so that they don’t lose out on job opportunities for lack of experience,” he said.
The county boss also urged the national government and other counties to take the issues of youth seriously. According to Mandago, the youth need to be given internship so that their capacity is built.
“We need to build the capacity of our youths as this will ensure we have the adequate skilled manpower and do away with this trend where mega projects are undertaken by foreigners,” he said.
The planned program is to attach some youths to the county government of Uasin Gishu and some to the private organization across the country. The youth will gain experience and earn a token.
Under the programme, interns who are degree holders will earn a monthly stipend of Sh13,500 while diploma holders will receive Sh11,500 per month. Those with certificates are to be paid Sh8,500 monthly.
