Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru could set a record if she wins the Council of Governor chairperson's position today.

Should she win, Waiguru will become the first female governor to head the council.

The race has attracted six candidates that include; Waiguru, Governors;  Anyang' Nyong'o (Kisumu), Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) Salim Mvurya (Kwale) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega).

The seat is currently being occupied by Nanok who took over from former Meru governor Peter Munya. Waiguru is the current vice chair.

The Council of Governors (COG) was established under Section 19 of the Intergovernmental Relations Act (IGRA 2012).

 It comprises of the Governors of the forty-seven counties, and its main functions are the promotion of visionary leadership; sharing of best practices and offer a collective voice on policy issues.

CoG also promotes inter-county consultations; encouraging and initiating information sharing on the performance of County Governments with regard to the execution of their functions. 

In addition, the council provides a mechanism for consultation among county governments, share information on the performance of the counties in the execution of their functions, facilitate capacity building for Governors, and consider reports from other intergovernmental forums on national and county interests.
