Former Kenya Pipeline Managing Director Shem Ochuodho has weighed in on the heated debate regarding the move by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to scrap the rule requiring anyone vying for a post in the organisation to produce the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) certificates.
Speaking during NTV's AmLive show on Monday morning, the former legislator criticised LSK, arguing that this is the ripe time for Kenyans to shield themselves from the 'incorrigible' lawyers.
"It is incumbent for Kenyans to decide it's time to stop over depending on lawyers," he said.
He further added that the glorification of the law practitioners has caused lawyers in the country to engage in 'dirty' activities, adding that Kenyans should exercise caution when dealing with them.
"Kenyans have over-glorified the law profession," he added.
Ochuodho posited that it was inconsequential for the lawyers to change the regulations and requirements only to suit a particular individual's interest.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is preparing to hold elections for representatives of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in May, this year.
The move by LSK was in favour of Professor Tom Ojienda whose candidacy has been marred by controversy over his KRA certificate clearance.
Ojienda had earlier argued that KRA's decision to deny him the clearance certificate was aimed at preventing him from being elected to the JSC male representative post.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has been the most vibrant human and social rights defender in the country advocating for the democratic space.
