In a statement posted at the institution's social media platform, the university clarified that all SMS would be sent via number named 'MKU' only.

"Mount Kenya University wishes to clarify that official text communication is done through the number named 'MKU' (does not allow reply). Kindly ignore messages sent from personal numbers. Any other communication is done via our website, official social media platforms and the students portal," the university wrote in a Facebook post.

The statement follows concerns from the public over a series of messages from different personal numbers purporting to be from the institution.

In the random messages, individuals suspected to be con men/women ask parents and students for monies regarding some services which are otherwise offered free of charge at the institutions.

The official clarification also comes at a time that first-year students are expected to report to their respective courses starting from May.

As the case might be, new parents and students could easily fall prey to messages from individuals out to make quick cash by the fake messages.
