Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is today expected to appear before the Senate Committee on Devolution and Inter-County Relations to respond to queries on why he is yet to fill the deputy governor's position.
The Nairobi Governor is yet to appoint his deputy 14 months since former Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe resigned.
Igathe resigned in January 2018 citing failure to win Sonko's trust
Last month, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja raised concerns over Sonko's delay in picking his deputy.
Sakaja said that Nairobi County Government is not running as per the constitution.
The Senator accused Governor Sonko of allegedly ignoring a Supreme Court ruling that advised the governors to nominate their deputies within 14 days if one dies, resigns or impeached.
Senator Sakaja also wants Sonko to explain why his government is operating without a majority of County Executive Committee members.
Last year a section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) threatened to impeach Sonko accusing him of undermining devolution.
The MCA's also criticised Sonko for allegedly shifting county operations from City Hall to his home in Machakos.
Sonko, however, defended himself saying he will not bow to pressure to appoint his deputy.
The governor said he was taking time to make sure he settles on the right candidate for the deputy governor position.
In January, Sonko halted plans to appoint his deputy, saying that he is considering a request made by the National Super Alliance (NASA).
The Nairobi Governor claimed that NASA had requested him to consider nominating its nominee Rehab Wangui for the position.
