A man of the Akorino faith has been arrested for allegedly trying to circumcise his wife in Muthenge, Tharaka Nithi County.
The man’s wife is said to have reported the case to local administrators leading to the arrest on the man on Thursday.
Police responded swiftly and arrested the man together with three other family members. A Nyumba Kumi official said they had been shocked by the incident.
“This is a shame to us as these are old people and such things should not be heard from them. How can a man of such age start such issues? Didn’t he know how the wife was for all those years?” the Nyumba Kumi member who requested for anonymity said.
He added: "This is even an embarrassment to his church."
The four are expected in court tomorrow. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains illegal in Kenya and the government has been cracking down on those who practice it.
According to the Anti-FGM board, the cultural practice leaves women disturbed and puts their future lives at risk especially during childbirth.
