Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino congratulated Kenyan athlete Hellen Obiri after she won the women’s senior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark.
In a rare tweet, the MP shared his enthusiasm and pride over the sport, which secured the nation's gold in the final.
As a show of support to the athlete, Babu Owino shared pictures of Obiri crossing the line as she won the race accompanied with a heartwarming message saying
"Beautiful, wonderful, amazing!!! Asante sana for making us proud Hellen Obiri. Congratulations!" he tweeted.
Hellen Obiri became the first woman in history to win a senior world title in indoors, outdoors and at cross country. The only man to achieve such a feat is Ethiopia's, Kenenisa Bekele.
Obiri led from the start to the finish in which was a tightly contested race beating neighbouring rivals Ethiopia who had to settle for second and third.
Obiri who celebrated her win in style said "This is the only medal I didn't have and I am happy to claim it in style. I led from the start but I was not in a hurry considering the tough course. I wanted to break midway but I couldn't shake off my rivals. I knew the Ethiopians were tough on the hills hence I kept them close until the last hill before I broke."
