The Catholic church leadership in the country has joined the ongoing battle between Deputy President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The two have been involved in a fierce battle after Raila claimed that Pope Francis rejected a car gift Ruto gave to Kisumu Archbishop Philip Anyolo in January.
But Speaking to the Nation on phone, Cardinal John Njue denied the existence of such an order from Rome, saying that Raila's claims cannot be verified.
"I am not aware of how the comments came about. I don’t know about claims that the Holy Pope directed the Church to return the gift,” said the Cardinal.
Speaking in Ugenya on Saturday, Raila claimed that the Pope ordered the vehicle given back after realizing that it was bought using corruption proceeds.
Ruto on Sunday rubbished the claims, saying that the funds used to buy the guzzler were contributed by him, President Uhuru Kenyatta and other Christian leaders.
The Bishop has also since denied claims, saying that he deliberately contributed it to another institution which needs it as he has another car given by believers.
"We have not received such a communication that we return the car. However, I wish to state that during my installation in January, I received two cars, but they don’t personally belong to me. They are the property of the diocese," he told the paper.
The issue is promising to further raise political temperatures in the country in the coming weeks and is coming at a time when the two have reignited their enmity.
