Legendary Olympian, Nyantika Mayioro died on Sunday 24th February 2019 at Christamarriane Hospital in Kisii County. He was battling with Tuberculosis.
The pioneer athlete participated in major races during his time, the most noticeable one being the Indian Ocean Games at Madagascar in the 1950’s. He emerged as the winner during the competition even after starting the 3 miles race 30 seconds late.
Following his demise, Kisii County residents have come out appealing to the National and County governments to rename Gusii Stadium as Nyantika Mayioro Stadium.
Enoch Jazir beseeched the National and County Governments to rename the stadium as a way of paying tribute to Mayioro.
“Nyantika, 88 was a neglected hero who did not gain recognition for his exceptionally good performances in the tracks. Through this he will be honored,” Enoch said.
Justus Nyabando, a Kisii County youth also advocates that the stadium should be renamed so that even the coming generations will reminisce him.
“To commemorate him the stadium should be given his name,” Nyabando issued the plea.
