Ever wondered if Luos have their own names for the various professions existing in Kenya?

Well, they have and most of them are hilarious. Here are some of the names used to refer to various top professions in the country;

1. Lawyer - In the Luo vocabulary, a lawyer is referred to as 'okil kamaloka' or 'jamin-wach'. The last term means someone who contradicts what other people say, which is exactly what a lawyer does.

2. Police officer - they are referred to as 'askeche' or 'polis'. The term is a direct translation from English.

Initially, their nickname was 'osumba miruai', a nickname also given to security guards.

3. Musician - a single musician is referred to as 'jathum', a name that originates from the word 'thum' which translates to music.

4. Pathologist/morgue attendant - Onyango Otoyo is the name for morgue workers, especially pathological officers who are in direct contact with the corpses. Otoyo is a word that means to break. 

5. Sportsmen - They are called 'jotugo'.The name originates from 'tugo' which translates to play or game.

6. Doctors - They are called 'laktar', otherwise referred to as 'ajuoga', which is also the name for traditional healers.

7. Clergy - They are called 'jodolo', others will call them 'jayalo' (preacher), and jakuath (shepherd).

8. Farmer - 'Japur' is the Luo name for a farmer. 'Pur' means farming.

9. Fisherman - The most popular profession in Luo Nyanza is further divided into 'madhar' (the one who drops the anchor) and 'jakiew ngayi' (the person who paddles the boat). The main tittle is 'jalupo'.

10. Teacher - This one is called 'japuonj', its the most popular word among outsiders.
