Founding father, the late Jomo Kenyatta, was an interesting person, and being in his 70’s was inspired and amused by rather funny things.

On some occasions, he got angry when things did not go as he wanted, at one point forcing his sons to attend Sunday school at the All Saint’s Cathedral for failing to sing Christmas carols.

On this day, Jomo was inspired by a group of children who went to entertain him at the Nakuru State lodge and enjoyed their carols which were beautifully done.

Being a Christmas day, he had brought along his family, including his sons Uhuru and Ngegi Kenyatta as well as his daughter Margaret Kenyatta.

To prove that his children could also sing as beautifully as the visiting entertainers, he called out the trio to do it but was left disappointed when they could not.

Though the children of his nephew Ngegi Muigai stepped in to cover for the trio, Kenyatta slapped the children with a mandatory attendance at the All Saints Church.

The Sunday school lessons, however, did not last long as First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s brother George Muhoho who was then a Catholic priest later stepped in to have the trio attend masses in his church.

This side of Kenyatta and the misfortunes of the trio is according to his then social secretary Elizabeth Mumbi in her memoirs, ‘Miss Uhuru 1963: Working for Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’.
